Always a pleasant surprise when you get an email inquiring if he/she can interview you. Even better when it's from a company with a deep camera tradition as Mamiya. That was the case back in early Dec. 2011 when one of their splendid writers Ron and I sat down for an East/West Coast telephone chat.

It was a long detailed conversation about my path as it felt great to recollect the past and how I was introduced to the beautiful craft of photography. Not only have they not changed the recipe for their delightful entries but they use equipment and techniques that have been around since 1921. This past summer I had the chance to visit the factory in Hradec Kralove with good friend Martin Cernik whose friend's father owns the company. Some of the equipment I saw were engraved with letters reading U.S.S.R. Hhmm, that rings a bell ..

With the explosion of the digital revolution this past decade FOMA was one of those analog companies that almost went out of business. ( RIP Polariod Type 55 ) Luckily, they downsized, tightened up and are now growing as well as making film for a variety of "HIPSter" style brands such as Lomography. I recently found myself up in Northern North America for a Fall 2012 Denim campaign. Clean living up here in these woods. Plastic bottles are shunned upon and that's the way it's supposed to be. Outdoor grilling is a staple with local fish exploding on your taste buds .. the air is simply crisp up here. Hhhmmm, might I find myself here at one point later on in life ..

When in Canada, do as Canadians as the motto goes. It was downright cold, wet, and muddy. Not a problem though as the creative team picked up some fine overalls looking the part. CD Mr. Matt Deak and filmer Trent Mitchell enjoying a cup of Joe as we warm up. Ohh, and that dinner was stupendous .

Team CoCo up at the Warner Brothers studio in Burbank invited our favorite Snowboarder to the set for a chat about his glitzy movie project. Little Birdie runs into Studio glass

While deep into scanning for a fresh edition of the website I heard this loud "tthhumpp" outside the entry .. It was a fimilar sound as our studio facade has many windows that birds mistake for the sky. This little guy had a pleasant yellow hue about him. I was immediately saddened as I thought he had passed however 10 min later he popped up, gave a thumbs up, and flapped over to his flock that were chilling in our fig tree. After posting this pic to FB, I found out it's a Wilson Warbler .. A family of birds that migrate from the NorthWest through SoCal on their way to Mexico. Thanks bud, you made my day ..

Excited to finally showcase a job that was shot a bit ago. With production of clothing lines months ahead of seasonal arrivals one has to sometimes wait to spread the word about a commission. Well, with Fall in the air and product at stores I'd like to introduce the Limited Collection of Fall 2011. It's by far one of my most memorable collaborations to date.

With talented Creative Director Matt Deak, skate team member Austyn Gillette and Kristi McKnight assisting with style we embarked on a day mission into the local Angeles National Forest. That light couldn't of been any cleaner as we all hustled to shoot the entire campaign from sun up to sun down. I must say, the final Line Book looks stunning printed on Uncoated FSC Mix paper at a slick size of 6.5 x 9 in. Enjoy these selects ..

Oh my, it's been a minute since my last update. Shall we get caught up ..

First and foremost is the wonderful birth of our son who entered mother earth on August 22. For those of you who have children you know what I mean when you don't get much sleep the first few months. A new learning curve to master as my wife and I say. All is splendid, he is healthy, and we are becoming wiser parents.

On the photo side, the fruits of my hard labor are currently finding their way to the masses. As some of you may recall, I spent two months in Wyoming back in Jan.Feb shooting with the Art of Flight crew. Good buddy Travis Rice suggested I make the trek and it has become one of my most memorable snowboard commissions to date. After 4 years off the circuit, it felt nice being out in the mtns with good company.

As we await the birth of our first child, I couldn't help but look back at this piece I worked on last year for a natural-pathe Dr. who is also a great friend. Tending to the garden is a way to connect .. It's a way for me to exit and focus on tasks that aren't photography based. This variety ( a member of the Ti Plant family) has bloomed around the studio these past couple of weeks. Very glad I documented this journey as we are now looking forward to little MZ's arrival. Last week we had an anniversary for a member of our team. Vessel, our Volvo XC70, turned 10 years old. I remember rolling him out of the showroom nervous wondering how I would handle those payments. Little did I know he would be that one stable asset during my many road trips working away. From towing sleds in Wyoming to 17 hour voyages home, the Vessel handled all that and much much more. Here's to 10 more partner .. this time around you'll be also providing our child to be (little MZ) the safety he/she will need. CHEERS ..

From Czech Republic to New York City w/ LUV

Oh my .. .. on the road once again. In the beginning of this month my wife and I found ourselves in the Czech Republic for a nice vaca. The entire Zapalac and Pavlacka families reside there .. uncles, aunts, cousins, etc ... 16 cousins and counting I believe.

The last time I visited was in 2002, however this trip in particular had a deeper meaning to it. You see, Lyn and I are expecting our first child in August. I wanted soo dearly to show her the mountains of Moravia, specifically the Valassky region where my mother and father come from. There is a spirit in those hills that we wanted to transcend into our little baby to be. Happy that we did as I know my relatives were quiet pleased to meet Lyn and send positive Czech greetings to the little one.

"Ima" , our Imacon Flextight Scanner, finally returned home the other day after voyaging east to Hasselblad HDQTRS. It's a shame they closed their Redmond, WA office as it was a bit more efficient when shipping these 40 lb beasts. All good though, Ima needed a fresh Lube n Tune as he approached his 12th year of service. I've had the opportunity of being with him for 7 years now. When one is on the road for extended times, your mail becomes an after thought. Nice to find a copy of the new Quiksilver Mtn. Line Book for 2011/12 in the pile the other day. We shot it back in Nov. with the first batch of photos showcased at SIA Denver this past Feb. Had an amazing time with the athletes, Mr Matt Deak (CD extrodinaire), Oren Tanzer, my assistant Stangel-erator, and JOHNNY .. my 89' Dodge D350. Johnny set the tone while keeping the crew warm on that brisk night of shooting Rice's collection and toted all the gear around for those 4 days. Been out of CA since Dec. 17th finding myself in Jackson Hole, Wyoming .. Avery special place for me. I met my wife here 7 years ago during another work stint. Feels amazing to be back after a 4 year sabbatical from photographing the Snowboard culture especially when I've been working with the Brainfarm crew and their new movie "The Art of Flight" featuring Travis Rice, Mark Landvik, Scotty Lago, n many others. The teaser hit a million views in four days .. Hhhmm, something tells me this is going to be a show stopper ..

In addition, we're also working on lengthy features for Outside Magazine, Snowboarder, Snowboard as well as advertising campaigns for Quiksilver, Billabong, Volcom and Redbull. It's been a non stop escapade from dawn to dusk 6 days a week in chilly temps. I wouldn't have it any other way ..

Back in March 2010, I had the privilege of hanging out on Daryl Hanna's 22 acre estate up in the Malibu Hills photographing it's essence. It's an amazing piece of land with a fresh flowing creek, chickens, pigs .. with Leo Carillo State Beach just down the road. There are multiple living quarters as well as yurts that surround a main culinary structure. It's a super groovy layout. I was there to photograph ex-pro skiers Shane Anderson and Micah Black as they work on an upcoming album. What I was most impressed with was the fact that Shane had built his residence out of reclaimed materials. Shouldn't we all do that .. ..

Back in July I got a chance to shoot an editorial project using a vintage Polaroid camera and my trusted Mamiya 7. It was around 4th of July and our mission was to capture the wonders on and around HWY 395 traveling from the Los Angeles basin to Mammoth, CA. The Medic and I once again piled into the "Dreamer" and off we went observing the gorgeous Owen's Valley at a glorious average speed of 28 mph. Thanks for the super fun assignment Bravo Baker.

We ran into **johnny** in Medford, Oregon. It was the last day of our two week journey up north. Dick Moore, the only owner, kept this 1989 Dodge Ram 350 5.9 L Diesel in tip top shape. All sorts of extras accompany this machine. We got power windows, a Clifford alarm, air bags, an air brake, chrome accents, yellow fog lights, lumber rack, and on and on they go.

Dick, I promise to keep the legacy alive. Thanks for reminding me about the wonders of owning a rig especially when she's averaging 22-23 miles a gallon.

We've been on an extended road trip up here in Oregon land. For the first time, since my allergies have been cleared, I have been able to explore this beautiful state without having pollen, grass attacks and I must say it is a natural wonder. Minimal style; camping by lakes and rivers and shooting ample amounts of film/polaroids for a stock client and an upcoming art exhibit has never been this much fun. One more week to go. Can't wait to get the film processed and start scanning the goodies........

In a previous post I mentioned how as a child I wanted to be an Architect. I feel in a way that at some point in my life an opportunity will arise to design/build a home from the ground up. Soo when my boy Chauncey highly suggested this movie about the life of Louis Kahn, I immediately raced over to the local Blockbuster and scheduled a movie night with the Mrs. My Architect is an independent flick from 2003 directed and narrated by Louis's son Nathaniel Kahn. It's more then a documentary. It's a search by Nathaniel to uncover the secret life of his father and to unravel his most spiritually prized building in Bangladesh, the Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban.

Before there was the Staple Center, there was the Great Western Forum. Before there was Kobe n Gasol, there was Magic and Kareem. Before there was a bandwagon of fans with flags attached to car windows, there were those who ate their Wheaties and felt like champions. "Coop a Loop" as I call her is predominately placed inside the studio for all to ponder. Always a treat to open one's mailbox and find a sealed brown envelope holding a magazine. This was the case this week as UK's COOLER found its way across the pond and onto the premises of the studio. For the Apr/May issue Sam and crew asked to showcase images that they had hand selected. I was delightfully surprised to find the clean design of the spread and the clever integrity of the entire magazine. Well done Sam as I look forward to future collaborations.

Our creative friends over at 9000 Wolves have released a film titled I LIKE YOU that is premiering tonight at the Lido Theater in Newport Beach at 7:00pm. I've worked with Heiniken and JoJo in the past and am looking forward to what looks to be a classic independent. These guys had a tight tight crew throughout the very short production time. When your up in the Malibu hills on a 22 acre parcel of beautiful land one becomes enlightened. As was the case yesterday as I found myself engulfed in a portrait session on the grounds of the actress from "that" famous mermaid movie. There was a very organic vibe going down. No microwave, solar power, salvaged building materials, chickens, a pig, etc... I'll post the pics once they publish, in the meantime here's a little flava that represents their living up in the hillz...

Deep into scanning new images and working on a fresh promo, one needs to take a break and enjoy a nice lunch. So I thought, what a better way then to indulge myself with a plate of the world famous "Danny Disks". The ingredients you ask, well here they are: Gluten Free Waffles from Trader Joes nicely toasted smothered with TJ Cottage Cheese and topped with sliced Bananas and Agave spread. Hhhmm , hhh,, mm.

An Architect. That is the question we are always asked as a youth. I guess it was because I saw things on a linear plane and the fact that my father was rebuilding our house when I was growing up. Natural wood, post n beam, windows, and lush vegetation are the things I'm most fond of now. I grab the 4x5 from time to time to get my fix on as the SoCal region is blanketed with mid century gems. Here we are. Alive, healthy, and ready to pick fruits from our hard labor in 2009. Our orange tree is looking really tasty. Many peoples have come by the Studio on Farm for a fine conversation over peeled vitamin C as well as picking up a signed/numbered copy of the photo book Mile Seventy Eight. Here we are. Scanning new images from the past month. It's always nice to get encouragement from your peers when you are deep in creative motions.
